€90 Million Invested in Biomedical Research Since 2017

The Strategic Plan for Health Research and Innovation (Peris), managed by the Catalan Department of Health, has allocated approximately €90 million to 740 grants supporting research, talent development, and innovation since its launch in 2017. This funding includes €47.2 million for excellence in research, €27.8 million to foster research talent, €4.8 million for institutional strengthening of research centres, and €8.9 million for innovation projects, according to a department statement issued on Friday 6th November 2026.

Budget Grows to €64.8 Million in 2026

The creation of the Directorate General for Health Research and Innovation (Dgris) in 2016 marked a turning point, increasing the annual budget for grant calls by €10 million to €43 million. Ten years later, the Dgris budget has grown to €64.8 million in 2026.

26 Calls, Over 2,000 Applications

Between 2017 and 2026, 26 public calls for proposals have been issued, attracting more than 2,000 applications. The programme has also enabled participation in major European initiatives, including EP Per Med, ERA4Health, and PrecisEU. The Peris plan is now established as a key driver of biomedical research in Catalonia, reinforcing the region’s research infrastructure and supporting scientific careers.

The growth of the Dgris budget reflects our long-term commitment to making health research a strategic pillar of the Catalan system.
