Review Follows Summer Fires in Collserola
Following two wildfires this summer in the Collserola natural park, Barcelona City Council has launched a review of urban planning in mountain-adjacent neighbourhoods to strengthen fire protection.
The assessment covers Torre Baró, Les Planes, La Font del Gos and Can Notari, focusing on road layouts to improve emergency access and building characteristics that could influence fire risk.
City Aims to Address Urban Precariousness
Laia Bonet, Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning, confirmed at Tuesday's Ecology and Urban Planning Commission that the council is compiling a comprehensive document on Collserola and its surrounding areas. This will guide city policy in coming years and prioritise necessary actions.
The move follows a proposal by Republican councillor Eva Baró, who highlighted urban precariousness in these areas and called for improved infrastructure to match city-wide standards.
"There is a part of the city that suffers from precariousness in urbanization," said Baró, urging that "the same urban quality of the city" be extended to mountain zones.
Baró specifically asked the council to identify vulnerable points such as dead-end streets and plots directly bordering forested land. Bonet confirmed these issues are being addressed in the ongoing planning review.
Resilience Plan Gains Cross-Party Support
Esquerra Republicana's proposal for an urban resilience plan was approved with support from all political groups except Vox, which abstained.
The council's efforts aim to improve emergency preparedness, including clearer evacuation routes and better access for fire services, amid growing concern from residents about fire risks.
