Work Begins on Urban Renewal in Sants
On Monday 26 October 2026, construction began on sewer improvements beneath Carrer de Sagunt, marking the start of a broader urban renewal project in Barcelona’s Sants district. The work will continue until 7 December 2026, during which 85 metres of sewer collector will be rehabilitated, including replacing its base and repairing walls and vaults. Access to the site will be maintained via two manholes at either end of the pedestrian stretch of the street.
New Green and Play Space for Residents
Between October 2026 and May 2027, the vacant triangular plot between Carrer de Burgos and Carrer de Sagunt will be redeveloped into a green, communal area for local residents. The project, part of the Ajuntament’s Programa d'Espais de Proximitat i Interiors (PEPI), will deliver new walkways, seating, play equipment, trees, and vegetation to create shaded areas. A total of 747 square metres will be upgraded, including adjacent pavements on both streets. The wall shared by buildings bordering the triangle will also receive green treatment, while footpaths will be renewed and modified to meet accessibility standards. This includes tactile paving, improved gradients, drainage, widened gutters on Carrer de Sagunt, and new pedestrian crossings on both streets. Three new streetlights and two concrete half-spheres will be installed, along with two xicrandes (a type of ornamental tree).
This space will serve as a play area for Escola Cal Maiol until the school relocates in September 2028.
School Play Area and Safety Upgrades
The redeveloped site will temporarily function as a play zone for Escola Cal Maiol, located directly opposite on Carrer de Sagunt, until the school moves to its new Can Batlló campus in 2028. Additional improvements include renewing crossings on the Burgos side and rounding street corners at the intersection of Carrer de Burgos with Finlàndia and Sagunt streets, covering a further 75.80 square metres. Prior to redevelopment, industrial buildings on the site were demolished. Soil contaminated with metals was removed to make the area safe for public use. The project follows community consultations held in 2025, where residents contributed ideas for the design of what is officially classified as an urban park under the Metropolitan General Plan.
