Barcelona City Council has approved definitive plans for significant urban improvement works on Carrer de la Jota, extending the ongoing transformation of Avinguda Meridiana into the Nou Barris district. This €626,000 project will start in the third quarter of 2026, enhancing a key connection in Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta.
The intervention focuses on the final stretch of Carrer de la Jota, located between Carrer de Pardo and Avinguda Meridiana. It aims to adapt the street's conditions for better mobility, accessibility, and lighting. Works will also renew pavements, the sewage network, and underground existing aerial utility lines. This modernisation effort will improve both the functionality and aesthetics of the street.
Xavier Marcé, Councillor for Nou Barris, highlighted the project's importance. He stated, "With this action, we complete the pending pacification, unblocking a space that needed accessibility improvements and a clearer connection with Meridiana." He added that the project updates the area to "today's urban quality standards: more accessible spaces, more green, better lighting, and friendlier mobility."
Connecting to Meridiana's Transformation
The project is expected to last approximately five months, with completion anticipated by late 2026. This timeline aligns with the broader Avinguda Meridiana transformation, which began in April 2025 and is also set to finish by the end of 2026. The section of Carrer de la Jota undergoing reform is the closest to these larger Meridiana works. This ensures a cohesive urban design across the connecting areas.
Councillor Marcé also referenced earlier efforts, noting, "Already during Mayor Maragall's term, an initial urban improvement was promoted to organise this area and adapt it to the neighbourhood's needs." This new project builds on that foundation, bringing contemporary urban standards to a historically important area. It reflects a long-term vision for improving public spaces in Nou Barris.
Wider Urban Upgrades in Nou Barris
This specific improvement on Carrer de la Jota is part of a wider series of urban actions across the Nou Barris district. These initiatives include works on several streets perpendicular to Passeig de Fabra i Puig. The overall effort represents a substantial renewal for the area, benefiting residents in the Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta and Porta neighbourhoods.
The City Council plans to invest €1.98 million in reforming Carrer Amílcar, specifically its connection with Passeig de Fabra i Puig. Additionally, nearly €2.3 million is allocated for a full improvement of Carrers de Santa Pau, Emili Roca, and Desfar. These projects collectively aim to enhance public spaces and infrastructure, creating a more pleasant and functional environment for local communities. The upgrades will improve daily life for thousands of residents.
The upcoming works on Carrer de la Jota will further integrate the neighbourhood with the modernised Avinguda Meridiana. Residents can expect improved urban environments and better connections across this busy part of Barcelona. These developments show the City Council's commitment to enhancing urban quality and accessibility throughout the district.
