Unanimous Council Approval

On Monday 2nd November 2026, the Badalona City Council gave initial approval to a budget modification allocating €230,000 for the purchase of a property at 341 Avinguda Alfons XIII in the Sant Roc neighbourhood. The decision, taken during the ordinary plenary session, paves the way for Badalona’s first municipal soup kitchen. The resolution, published on the city council’s official website, passed unanimously and marks a key step in addressing food insecurity among vulnerable residents. The two-storey building, with a total usable area of 263 square metres, will be adapted to serve up to 64 meals daily across two shifts.

Next Steps and Project Timeline

Once the property acquisition is formalised, the council will launch a tender for renovation works with a budget of €282,411. The project was first announced in April 2026 by Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol during an extraordinary plenary on poverty and homelessness. According to municipal plans, the dining hall will serve individuals referred by Badalona’s social services. The facility may also function as a temporary shelter during extreme cold or other emergencies.

This is a concrete response to months of criticism about the lack of support for homeless people in the city.

The initiative comes amid longstanding concerns from social organisations and opposition parties about the city’s handling of homelessness and insufficient shelter provision.

Broader Social and Heritage Measures

The same council session approved other measures, including a €6.45 million budget modification for the expropriation of the Sant Jeroni de la Murtra monastery complex, designated a Site of Cultural Interest (BCIN) since 2014. Separate motions were also passed to address urgent repairs at the La Llauna institute building, including water leaks and roof sanitation.
