Increased Service from Wednesday
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will increase metro services on lines 1 and 5 starting Wednesday 14 October, adding trains to reduce waiting times during peak periods. The changes follow a sustained rise in passenger demand, particularly on Saturday afternoons and weekday rush hours. On Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., two additional trains will run on both L1 and L5. This will reduce headways on L1 from over six minutes to between 5 minutes 30 seconds and 4 minutes 46 seconds, depending on the time slot. On L5, intervals will fall from nearly six minutes to under five minutes during afternoon off-peak periods.
- On weekdays, an extra train will operate on L5 during the afternoon peak, improving service frequency when demand is highest.
- The adjustments aim to increase transport capacity on two of the busiest metro lines in the network.
- TMB manages both the metro and bus systems in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, operating 125.4 km of metro lines across eight routes.
Passenger Growth Drives Change
The service upgrade responds to significant growth in passenger numbers. According to TMB data, Saturday validations on L1 between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. rose from 215,522 in 2023 to 236,400 in 2026, an increase of nearly 10%. On L5, Saturday validations in the same period grew from 174,797 to 200,282, a rise of almost 15%.
The positive evolution of demand consolidates the growth in the use of public transport in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.
TMB stated the move reflects the ongoing recovery and expansion of public transport use since 2023, when the network recorded over 643 million validations, a record at the time. In 2024, metro journeys alone reached nearly 469 million, part of a wider record of 684 million combined bus and metro trips across the network.
What This Means for Commuters
Residents and commuters using L1 and L5 can expect shorter waits and more reliable service, especially on Saturday evenings and weekday afternoons. The changes are part of TMB’s ongoing effort to adapt capacity to real-time demand patterns. Passengers are advised to check the official TMB news page for updates, particularly as the 15 October date coincides with a general strike that may affect other services.
