Three Families Face Eviction in Sant Cugat
The Sant Cugat Tenants' Union has raised the alarm over three evictions scheduled within 14 days in October. The first is set for Tuesday, 6 October at 10:30 a.m. in La Floresta, affecting Nick and his two children. The second is due on Thursday, 8 October at 10 a.m. on Pau Casals street, involving Carme and her son. A third eviction is planned for 20 October, though details remain limited. Nick has lived in the La Floresta property since the pandemic, when he and his family moved in after both parents lost work. The home was initially owned by a real estate fund and later sold to private buyers. Nick claims the new owners entered the property without permission while he was away and changed the locks, but he regained access through legal action. An earlier eviction was suspended, but the new date is confirmed for 6 October. He says he wishes to leave voluntarily but has no alternative housing.
Carme’s Case Involves Large Housing Holder
Carme’s eviction on Pau Casals street marks the second attempt after a previous date in July was postponed. The property is owned by Onix Renta, a company that markets rental housing across Sant Cugat and presents itself as a manager of residential and commercial properties. According to the Tenants’ Union, Carme has documented economic vulnerability. Under Catalan regulations, including Act 1/2022 on emergency housing, large holders, defined as companies owning more than 10 properties in Spain, may be required to offer social housing before proceeding with eviction for non-payment in cases of tenant vulnerability. The union asserts this obligation applies to Onix Renta and says negotiations involving social services, the Catalan Housing Agency, and local officials have not produced a solution.
In just 14 days, we have three evictions,
the union stated, calling for public protests to defend the right to housing.
Third Case Highlights Rental Affordability Crisis
The third eviction, set for 20 October, has not been detailed publicly, but the union placed it in the context of rising rental prices in Sant Cugat. Listings on Pau Casals street show rents reaching €1,842 per month, including community fees and parking, with one property marked as owned by a large holder under national housing law. The union is urging residents to attend demonstrations and support affected families. Those seeking emergency housing assistance can apply through the municipal emergency housing portal or contact the Local Housing Office. Vulnerability risk assessments can be requested via the IRER application form.
