Gang Violence Flares at Former Heron City Site
The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating a violent robbery involving minors linked to rival Latin American gangs at Som Multiespai shopping centre in Nou Barris, formerly known as Heron City. The incident occurred on Monday, 31 August at 8:35 PM on Avenida de Janeiro. According to Catalan police, the victim was a 17-year-old boy who has a recognised disability assessed at 68% under the Spanish grading system, in which 33% is the threshold for legal recognition. He was approached by a group of youths inside the complex. He was slapped before his mobile phone was stolen. The suspects fled the scene immediately. The victim's mother reported the attack to police, stating it was connected to urban gangs. Investigators confirmed the individuals involved were known to each other.
Gang Affiliations and Territorial Rivalry
Police sources indicate the attackers are believed to be affiliated with 'Los Trinitarios', a gang primarily of Dominican origin identified by the colour green. The victim, meanwhile, was acting as a recruiter for 'Barrio 18', a Central American-based gang with strong Honduran representation, known for wearing blue clothing, Los Angeles sports caps, and Nike Cortez shoes. The shopping centre assault is not an isolated event but part of an ongoing power struggle between the two groups in northern Barcelona. Both gangs have previously clashed in public spaces including the Via Favència tracks.
The incident may be a prelude to a more serious confrontation.
The Nou Barris Investigation Unit is assessing whether this robbery signals escalating hostilities. Police and Barcelona’s municipal force, the Guardia Urbana, have previously conducted surveillance operations in underused areas of the district to prevent minor disputes from turning into large-scale retaliations. 'Los Trinitarios' are considered the most structured gang in the metropolitan area, with a long-standing presence in Sant Andreu and Nou Barris marked by strict territorial control. 'Barrio 18' has been expanding its footprint through aggressive recruitment of minors.
