First Alleged Organizer Detained in Blocus Investigation

The Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the coordinated vandalism and looting in Barcelona last Saturday, 24th October 2026. This marks the first arrest of an alleged digital organiser in the ongoing investigation into the 'Blocus' network, a loosely structured group that used encrypted messaging to plan and direct violent actions across the city. According to the Mossos, the minor played an active role in a Telegram channel used to coordinate the riots. He is accused of distributing access links to the group, providing instructions on equipment to bring, sharing tactics to avoid police detection, and issuing self-protection guidelines to participants.

He allegedly incited others to engage in violent actions and proposed specific targets for looting.

The arrest was carried out on Friday 30th October in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. This follows a separate detention on Thursday in the Lleida region, where another minor was held for inciting a new protest scheduled for November in Lleida city. That individual was not linked to the Barcelona events but was attempting to mobilise a similar action.

Police Target Digital Coordination Networks

The Mossos have confirmed they are treating the case as part of a broader operation against youth-led violent groups. Their investigation focuses on how digital platforms were exploited to orchestrate real-world criminal activity with speed and anonymity. Telegram has come under pressure from Catalan authorities to close down mass chat groups used to organise the unrest. The regional police have invoked anti-terrorism procedures to expedite the blocking of such channels. While over 128 people were detained during and immediately after the riots on 24th October, this arrest is significant as it targets a suspected instigator who operated remotely, beyond the immediate scene of disorder. The Generalitat has announced it will exercise a private accusation in the judicial proceedings, underscoring the seriousness with which it views the events. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activity through the official Mossos d'Esquadra reporting portal at mossos.gencat.cat.
