"Sónar has died." That is the stark message now displayed on the official website and social media profiles of Barcelona’s world-renowned electronic music festival. As of Tuesday 27th October 2026, the announcement has triggered widespread confusion and concern among fans, who have found all previous posts on Instagram and X erased.

The message, presented in the style of a funeral notice, gives Sónar a lifespan of 1994–2026 and invites fans to leave condolences in a digital guestbook. However, entering an email appears to register users for the festival’s newsletter, suggesting the gesture is symbolic rather than literal.

According to La Vanguardia, the announcement was published online at midnight and also appeared in print as a mock obituary in the newspaper, reinforcing the theatrical tone. No official statement has confirmed or denied the nature of the campaign, though speculation points to a marketing strategy ahead of the next festival lineup announcement, typically made in November.

New Leadership, Structural Changes

The mystery unfolds against a backdrop of significant change. In October 2025, founding directors Enric Palau, Ricard Robles, and Sergio Caballero stepped down after 31 years, ending their leadership amid controversy over the festival’s parent company, Superstruct Entertainment, and its ties to investment fund KKR during the Israel-Gaza conflict.

François Jozic, founder of Brunch Electronik, took over as executive director. His tenure has already seen major reorganisation: in 2026, Sónar de Día and Sónar de Noche were merged into a single site at Gran Via 2 in L’Hospitalet, ending the long-standing split between daytime and nighttime events.

"The new direction has a corporate vision and no longer wants to do new or experimental things,"

, said Antònia Folguera, former commissioner of Sónar+D, who left the festival in June 2026 along with director Andrea Faroppa. Their departures, reported by La Vanguardia on 10th October 2026, have intensified concerns that the festival is shifting away from its roots in experimental music, digital culture, and technological innovation.

Attendance and Identity in Question

The 2026 edition of Sónar drew over 150,000 attendees, a decrease of more than 10,000 from 2024 but still a strong turnout. However, critics note that Primavera Sound has drawn away major acts such as Skrillex, Massive Attack, and Gorillaz in recent years.

Meanwhile, Sónar+D, the festival’s technology and creativity arm, moved to the Llotja de Mar in central Barcelona and recorded only modest attendance. Its separation from the main festival and leadership shake-up have raised questions about its future role.

The disappearance of Feroe Festival, a 2025-born alternative event cancelled due to poor ticket sales, adds context, but Sónar’s scale remains far larger.

What Comes Next?

While the “death” of Sónar is almost certainly not literal, it signals a symbolic break. Whether this marks a bold reinvention or a departure from its pioneering spirit remains to be seen. Fans await official details, likely within days, as tradition suggests artist announcements are imminent.
