Minister to answer for security response

Catalonia's Interior Minister Núria Parlon will appear before the Interior Committee of the Parliament on Wednesday 28 October 2026 from 3 p.m. to provide explanations over the government's response to the disturbances in Barcelona on Saturday 24 October 2026. The appearance follows formal requests from both ERC and Junts, with Junts having issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the minister to appear or face calls for dismissals.

Opposition demands accountability

Jordi Albert, deputy parliamentary spokesperson for ERC, announced the session and stated that the government must clarify what lies behind the social media calls that preceded the unrest, and why the looting incidents were neither anticipated nor adequately managed. ERC and Junts have both questioned the preparedness and operational decisions of the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, during the weekend's events.

Separately, the Mossos have requested judicial authorisation to trace the origins of online accounts on TikTok and Instagram believed to have incited the riots, according to reports from TodoAlicante. The Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the internment of six minors in connection with the violence, and the total number of detainees has risen to 130. The disturbances, which took place on Saturday 24 October, involved coordinated looting and vandalism in central Barcelona, prompting an urgent political and law enforcement response.

The government has to detail what is behind the calls and why the looting was neither foreseen nor adequately addressed.
