Additional Funding to Support Four-Year School Improvement Plan
The Department of Education and Vocational Training has approved a €28 million contribution to support renovation, adaptation, and improvement works across Barcelona's public schools, effective from 2026 through to 2029. This funding, confirmed in a resolution published on 11th May 2026 in the Official Gazette of Catalonia (DOGC 9662), will be distributed over four years and marks a significant increase from the previous €14 million committed over the same period. The investment forms part of the RAM (Reforma, Adequació i Millora) programme, which enables local administrations to carry out essential upgrades in publicly operated educational centres. These include maintenance, accessibility improvements, space adaptation, and facility renovations aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of students and staff.
Joint Investment Totals Over €70 Million in 2026
This latest allocation complements broader joint efforts between the Barcelona City Council and the Catalan government. According to the City Council, a total of €71 million is being invested in 2026 to improve and expand publicly operated educational facilities, with €55.5 million coming from the city and €15.5 million from the Department of Education and Vocational Training. These resources are funding 188 actions across the city, benefiting 148 educational centres. Of these, 126 projects began during the summer break to minimise disruption to the academic year. Works include new constructions, major renovations, and climate-focused upgrades such as the installation of aerothermal systems in 30 schools under the Barcelona School Climate Plan.
- New school buildings are under development at sites including Institut Escola Cal Maiol, Institut Escola Xirinacs, and Escola Gaia.
- Major improvements are underway at centres such as Institut Escola Sant Felip Neri, Institut La Flor de Maig, and Institut Mallorca.
- Renovations and accessibility upgrades are being implemented at schools including Escola Entença, Escola 9 Graons, and Institut Icaria.
This funding reflects our shared commitment to equitable, high-quality education and safe, modern learning environments for all students.
A separate project list from Barcelona Cultura confirms 83 summer works contributing to a wider package of 95 measures for 2024, backed by €62.3 million from the Barcelona Education Consortium. However, the current €28 million increase applies specifically to the 2026–2029 period under the RAM programme.
What This Means for Families and Schools
Parents and school administrators in affected districts can expect visible upgrades in infrastructure, improved safety, and better environmental performance in the coming years. The Barcelona City Council has published details of funded projects on its website at barcelona.cat, including participatory budget initiatives and Neighbourhood Plan projects. The Department of Education’s call for RAM projects was formalised under Resolution EDF/1425/2026, dated 5th May 2026, and published via the Barcelona Provincial Council’s official documentation portal (cido.diba.cat).
