Festival Countdown Amid Weather Worries

The Festa Major de Sants 2026 is set to begin on Saturday, 22 August, with over 300 activities across nine days and 11 elaborately decorated streets in Barcelona’s Sants neighbourhood. Volunteers from local residents’ commissions are completing handmade adornments just hours before the festivities kick off, all while monitoring rain predictions that threaten to damage delicate structures made from cardboard, wood, and recycled materials. "If a heavy rain falls, everything breaks," said Artur Castro, secretary of the Federació de la Festa Major de Sants, describing months of communal effort at risk. "We’ve spent so long crafting these displays, it would be a real shame."

Themed Streets Ready for Visitors

Each participating street has chosen a unique theme. Alcolea de Dalt honours the historic 24-hour Montjuïc motorcycle race with replicas of bikes and landmarks like the Venetian Towers and Font del Gat. Meanwhile, Alcolea de Baix embraces whimsy with a tribute to lost socks, residents have crafted oversized clothing items from painted cardboard.

We’re trying to believe it won’t rain. We’re working anyway, if we get wet, we’ll adapt.

, Gemma Massot, resident of Alcolea de Baix Despite rising summer temperatures, organisers remain focused on shifting weather patterns that could bring storms in the final days. Still, many residents urge optimism, defending the festival as a vital expression of community heritage. Artur Castro acknowledged recent tensions around neighbourhood festivals in Barcelona but described widespread participation as proof of support: "These few voices make more noise than the thousands who come to enjoy Sants and Gràcia.”
