Neighbourhood Pushback After Poblenou Festa Major
On Tuesday 13 October 2026, frustration boiled over in Barcelona’s Poblenou neighbourhood after the annual Festa Major left behind days of noise, sleepless nights, and public incivility. More than 1,000 residents have signed a petition on Change.org, calling for the relocation of concert stages from the upper section of Rambla del Poblenou, known locally as Rambla Jove, to the 22@ district or the coastal edge of the neighbourhood, where space is ample and homes are absent. The petition, organised by the Plataforma ReconduirFestaRamblaJove, highlights that between 10 and 20 September 2026, crowds of 2,500 to 3,000 people gathered nightly for concerts that exceeded legal noise limits at building facades.
Legal Noise Limits Exceeded
Under Article 44.7 of Barcelona City Council’s environmental regulations, sound levels among the public at street festivals are limited to 95 dB to protect hearing. However, the same rules stipulate that noise at residential facades must not exceed 80 dB, a far stricter threshold. Acoustic experts engaged by the platform found this limit was repeatedly breached during the festivities. According to the platform, 80 dB represents just over 3% of the power output of 95 dB. In practical terms, if 200 watts comply with the 95 dB limit in open areas, only 6 watts would be permissible at building fronts to meet the 80 dB standard.
We are not against the Festa Major being held, far from it. But it is becoming increasingly noisy and attracting more people. Afterwards, we spend days tripping over puddles of urine, excrement, living with bad smells, and having to cope with our daily obligations with nights where it's impossible to sleep until the early hours of the morning due to the noise.
Proposals for 2027 Festival
Residents propose two solutions: either move the concert stages to the 22@ district, an area without residential housing, or limit concerts to two nights with strict enforcement of the 80 dB facade limit. The current nine-day festival includes five nights deemed “unlivable” due to noise, they say.
Despite mutual agreement to communicate, no formal meeting took place between the Plataforma ReconduirFestaRamblaJove and the festival committee during the 2026 festivities, which have now concluded. While the committee claims support from a large part of the neighbourhood, the platform insists it does not claim to represent all residents and continues to call for a broader neighbourhood assembly.
Next Steps: Pressure on City Council
With no resolution in sight, the platform plans to take their own acoustic measurements directly to the Sant Martí district of the Ajuntament de Barcelona ahead of the September 2027 festivities. They cite ongoing cleaning improvements this year, attributed to a report submitted to local authorities, but stress that noise remains a critical issue. The Sant Martí district has not responded to inquiries from Metrópoli Abierta as of the morning of Thursday 15 October 2026.

- Proposed actions: relocate concerts or limit to two nights
- Next festival: expected September 2027
- How to act: sign the petition at Change.org or contact Sant Martí district offices
