Two Dead, One Missing After Extreme Rainfall

One person has died in Montornès del Vallès (Barcelona) as a result of the intense rainstorm that hit Catalonia overnight, according to Oriol Corbella, head of operations for the Catalan fire service (Bombers). This fatality follows another death in Tordera, where a woman was killed when a wall collapsed at a campsite. The confirmation came during a press conference on Sunday morning attended by Interior Minister Núria Parlon, Deputy Director of Civil Protection Imma Solé, and meteorological officials from Meteocat. The storm brought record rainfall, with 192mm recorded in central Barcelona, the highest single-day total in 20 years.

We are facing an exceptional weather event. The situation remains critical, especially along riverbanks.

Search Underway for Missing Person

Firefighters have launched a search operation for at least one person missing in the Pineda stream in Pineda de Mar (Barcelona), where emergency teams have established a dedicated response unit. The regional government has issued multiple ES-Alert warnings via mobile networks, urging residents in the Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Selva, Baix Empordà and Gironès regions to avoid all non-essential travel. An additional alert was sent specifically to those living near the Besòs river due to the risk of overflow, after rising waters were observed in Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Government Urges Public to Stay Alert

The Generalitat has urged citizens not to lower their guard, despite some areas seeing reduced rainfall by midday. Civil Protection will issue updated alerts within the hour to lift mobility restrictions in a dozen affected regions once conditions allow. Regional President Salvador Illa expressed his condolences on social media, stating: "I regret the death of a second person as a result of the storm. My condolences to their family." Emergency services, including Bombers and @emergenciescat, continue to operate across the region amid ongoing risks of flooding and landslides.
