A man has died in a paragliding accident near the BV-4501 road in Santpedor (Barcelona) after colliding with an electrical cable on Friday morning, according to the Generalitat Fire Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:40am, when the paraglider struck the cable and fell to the ground. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 10:15am. A fire unit attended the scene to secure the area affected by the fallen cable, which lies close to the roundabout at Ampans, about 50 metres from the Santpedor–Manresa road.
Initial reports indicate the man did not die from electrocution but from injuries sustained in the fall. A helicopter was dispatched as part of the emergency response but did not land at the site.
Second fatal paragliding accident in 48 hours
This is the second fatal paragliding incident in Catalonia within two days. On Wednesday afternoon, a 35-year-old man died after crashing into a wooded hillside in Castellfollit del Boix, also in the Barcelona province. Emergency teams reached him via helicopter crane operation, but he succumbed to severe injuries.
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, have taken over the investigation into the cause of the Santpedor accident.
Exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. The site has been closed off to traffic temporarily, affecting access along the local path near the accident zone.
