Myanmar has formally dropped its attempt to extradite Munimul Islam, a 40-year-old Bangladeshi tech entrepreneur, after admitting there is no criminal case against him, according to documentation seen by El País Barcelona. The Audiencia Nacional has dismissed the proceedings and lifted all precautionary measures, including the surrender of his passport.

Islam was arrested on 29 September upon arrival at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport under an Interpol red notice issued by Myanmar, which accused him of involvement in a scam linked to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. However, on 18 October, Myanmar informed the Spanish court it would not pursue extradition, stating Islam had only followed billing directives from foreign companies.

Islam, speaking to El País Barcelona, called the case politically motivated, saying, "There was never a criminal case against me; it has been politically motivated. Myanmar knew they had nothing, and yet they kept a red notice active." His lawyer, Cristian Carci, warned of risks where countries may misuse Interpol cooperation for political ends.

Family Reunited, Preparing for Return to UK

Islam spent a month in Brians 1 prison before securing release and bringing his wife, Rebecca Connor, and their two daughters to Spain. The family stayed in an apartment arranged by the Bangladeshi consulate in Barcelona and later rented a house in Cambrils. He now plans to return to Essex, but wants confirmation that Interpol has formally withdrawn the red notice before flying.
