Delays on Madrid-Barcelona High-Speed Line
Trains on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line are experiencing average delays of around 20 minutes on Thursday 5th November 2026, after a "small" pothole was detected in the railway infrastructure between Medinaceli, in Soria, and Ariza, in Zaragoza. The defect has forced trains to reduce speed through the affected section. Adif, Spain's railway infrastructure manager, was notified of the incident at 08:00 local time on Thursday, according to sources cited by EFE. Engineers are on site working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Service Disruption and Recovery Efforts
Adif has confirmed it is actively working to restore normal operations but has not yet provided an estimated time for full service resumption. Passengers are advised to check real-time updates via the Adif Avisos service for the latest information on train schedules. The high-speed line, one of the busiest in Spain, connects two of the country's largest cities and is operated by Renfe and private operator Iryo. Delays could affect connecting services at major hubs including Madrid Puerta de Atocha and Barcelona Sants.
Adif was alertado de esta incidencia a las ocho de la mañana de este jueves, según han informado fuentes del gestor de infraestructuras ferroviarias.
The disruption comes during a weekday morning travel peak, potentially affecting business commuters, tourists, and intercity travellers. No injuries or train damage have been reported.
What Passengers Should Do
Travellers scheduled to take AVE, Alvia or Avant services on this corridor today should allow extra time, verify departure times through the Adif Avisos portal or Renfe’s app, and retain tickets in case of eligibility for delay compensation under EU rail passenger rights.
