The La Perla street committee in Gràcia has reported that its workshop premises were sabotaged after silicone was found on the shutter on Sunday 2 July. The committee said the substance stopped the shutter from operating normally, disrupting the volunteer work used to prepare its street decoration for the Fiestas de Gràcia.

The premises are on Carrer de la Perla, where the group is building a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed display for this year's neighbourhood festival. The allegation was made in a statement published by the committee on social media and reported by Metrópoli Abierta.

“It is a direct attack on the collective and voluntary work that we carry out throughout the year to make the Festa Major possible,” the committee said.

La Perla said volunteers had spent the whole of the previous Saturday working between the premises and the street, in what it described as a calm atmosphere without late-night festival activity. It said the premises were closed at about 11.30pm.

The committee said no neighbour had approached the group to make a complaint about noise, and rejected any suggestion that the incident was a response to disturbance caused by a party.

It described the damage as part of a wider public campaign by some residents and groups questioning the continuation of the popular festival in the name of defending the neighbourhood.

La Perla said it was also concerned by litter, street urination, drinking in public and noise outside permitted hours. However, it opposed proposals to restrict activity times or remove street committees, saying these measures would cause the Festa Major to disappear.

“We have always been willing to listen, review whatever is necessary and work for a Festa Major that is more respectful and compatible with everyday life in the neighbourhood,” the committee said.

The committee said it remained willing to listen to neighbours and address possible disturbance.
