The 300-tonne cutting head for the L8 Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) tunnel boring machine arrived at Barcelona's Gran Via launch shaft this week. This critical component will excavate a 3.5-kilometre tunnel connecting the Espanya and Gràcia stations.

The Gran Via, a major Barcelona artery, hosts the launch shaft for this significant infrastructure project. The new tunnel will span 3.5 kilometres, connecting the existing Espanya station, a key transport hub, with Gràcia station. This will create a crucial link between FGC's Vallès lines and the Llobregat-Anoia lines.

Special transport operations moved the massive cutting head from Barcelona port to Gran Via overnight from Monday to Tuesday. Simultaneously, the tunnel boring machine's drive system, which rotates the cutting wheel, travelled from Sant Boi de Llobregat to the same Gran Via site, according to FGC's Llobregat-Anoia lines. These movements required a special operation coordinated with the Guardia Urbana to minimise traffic disruption.

Connecting Barcelona's FGC Lines

The L8 extension aims to link FGC's Vallès lines with its Llobregat-Anoia lines, significantly improving public transport connectivity across Barcelona. This project will add two new intermediate stations at Hospital Clínic and Francesc Macià, serving busy city areas.

The new intermediate stations will serve densely populated and commercially active areas. Hospital Clínic station will provide direct access to a major medical facility in the Eixample district, which houses over 260,000 residents. Francesc Macià station will improve connectivity for a significant commercial and transport interchange.

Advancing Major Infrastructure

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) stated these transports are part of a series that began earlier this year. These special deliveries will continue until mid-July, bringing various front-end components for the tunnel boring machine. The assembly of the machine itself started in February and is now nearing completion.

Once fully assembled, the tunnel boring machine will start its excavation work. This will mark a major step towards completing the L8 extension, which promises enhanced public transport for thousands of Barcelona residents and visitors.
