Commuters using Barcelona Metro’s L1 between Florida and Plaça de Sants will need to change route or use replacement buses from Friday 17 July until Friday 28 August. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the city’s public transport operator, says the closure will affect an average of 43,000 daily journeys on July weekdays and about 36,000 in August.
The shutdown will allow TMB to renew tracks between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou and update track equipment at Santa Eulàlia that provides access to the workshop. The works have a budget of €11.5 million, according to TMB’s announcement.
Metro connections and replacement buses
During the closure, L1 trains will continue to run on the sections from Hospital de Bellvitge to Florida and from Plaça de Sants to Fondo. TMB advises passengers to use other rail connections where suitable:
- Torrassa for L9 and L10 Sud metro services.
- Plaça de Sants for L5.
- Avinguda Carrilet for Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), Catalonia’s regional railway operator.
- Rambla Just Oliveras for Rodalies commuter rail services.
TMB will also operate a replacement bus service across the affected section. Buses are scheduled every 4–9 minutes on weekdays, every 5–10 minutes on Saturdays, and every 6–11 minutes on Sundays.
The weekday service will use 18 articulated buses, falling to 13 on Saturdays and 11 on public holidays. The journey is expected to take 32 minutes towards Florida and 25 minutes towards Plaça de Sants.
Replacement bus stops near Plaça de Sants and Florida
Services towards Florida will start on Carrer de Sants, near Plaça de Sants and beside the L1 entrance, before travelling via Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Plaça d'Ildefons Cerdà, Rambla Badal and Santa Eulàlia. They will finish on Avinguda del Masnou.
In the opposite direction, buses will begin on Avinguda del Masnou at Carrer Florida and return via Avinguda de Ponent, Plaça Blas Infante, Santa Eulàlia, Rambla del Badal and Carrer Olzinelles, ending on Carrer de Sants.
Extra staff at Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou
TMB says its information campaign began last Friday and will be expanded from 17 July, with staff deployed at more than 15 points on the network. More than 2,100 staff hours are planned, with additional assistance at Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou stations.
Passengers should check TMB service notices before travelling and allow extra time for the replacement bus or interchange at Torrassa, Plaça de Sants, Avinguda Carrilet or Rambla Just Oliveras.
