Historic Venue Revived After Seven-Month Hiatus

The Karma nightclub, a legendary fixture of Barcelona’s nightlife since 1978, has reopened its doors at Plaça Reial just seven months after closing. The venue, which once hosted artists like Gato Pérez, Jaume Sisa and Pau Riba, welcomed guests again on 10 October 2026, marking a rare reversal in the ongoing transformation of Ciutat Vella’s cultural landscape. The revival comes after the owners of Rei de Copes, a neighbouring bar, acquired the business to prevent its disappearance. Lay Gimeno, owner of Rei de Copes and now Karma, stated they wanted to preserve the venue’s musical identity and magic. The reopening has been hailed as a moral victory for local culture in a district where long-standing venues have increasingly given way to tourist-oriented spaces.

New Programming Focuses on Afternoon Dance Culture

Karma’s return is not a simple revival but an adaptation to changing social habits in Barcelona. Instead of late-night hours, the club now hosts Saturday afternoon sessions starting at 18:00 and closing at midnight, catering to a 30–50-year-old crowd seeking lively entertainment without sacrificing the next day. These new events are run by El Magnífico Club, a well-established indie and pop-rock night that has moved from Passeig Picasso to Karma. Nacho Jiménez, leading the Saturday events, explained that the afternoon format suits people who have changed lifestyles, many now married, divorced or parenting, but still want to dance. "You can go out, have fun, and be asleep by one," he said.

A house to keep doing what we know best: dancing, singing and celebrating the music that unites us.

The venue has upgraded its sound system and installed modern air conditioning while retaining its rebellious spirit. El Magnífico Club described the move as a natural evolution, allowing them to maintain their close-knit community in a larger, better-equipped space.

Live Music and Sunday Sessions Planned for 2027

The new management plans to expand operations by opening on Sundays and introducing live music and themed parties from February 2027. The focus will remain on local talent, with concerts set to become a regular feature. This programming shift aims to reinforce Karma’s role as a cultural hub rather than just a dance venue. Tickets for upcoming events are available via entradium.com, where the new season was officially announced. The reopening has already drawn strong interest from those who danced at Karma in past decades, as well as fans of El Magnífico Club’s indie rock curation. The return of Karma offers a counterpoint to the gentrification trends in the Gothic Quarter. In a city where farewell events have become routine, its second chance stands as a testament to grassroots resilience in Barcelona’s social fabric.
