Contemporary flamenco takes centre stage in Barcelona

Taller de Músics presents the 33rd edition of Ciutat Flamenco, a ten-day celebration of contemporary flamenco running from 16 to 25 October 2026. The festival will showcase premieres, emerging talent, and established artists across multiple venues in Barcelona, reaffirming Catalonia as a hub for flamenco creation and training. The programme opens on 16 October at SAT! with the Catalan premiere of Guacamayo, a new interdisciplinary work by dancer and visual artist José Maldonado that merges flamenco with live painting. Also making its Catalan debut is Más que baile by Ana Morales, winner of the 2022 National Dance Award, alongside Óbito, a new piece by rising star Yoel Vargas. Other performances include Firmamento by Esperanza Garrido, a guitar recital by Víctor Franco, Lorena Oliva’s process showcase Inèrcia, and the participatory project Ciutat dormitorio by Vanesa Gálvez. The festival will also feature the world premiere of Después del diluvio electrónico, an audiovisual performance by Jordi Latorre with dance by Carmela Muñoz, dramaturgy by Aina Serena, and live music by Zúbel Arana.

Spotlight on emerging artists and local creation

Ciutat Flamenco continues its commitment to new talent through Districte Flamenco, showcasing works by Adrián Gómez (Cara A y Cara B), Daniela Martín Heras (A la sombra de un poeta), and Marina Walpercin (De tu libertad). A new edition of Ciutat Batalla, a competition for dance and movement arts linked to flamenco and Spanish dance, will culminate on 23 October at Ateneu Popular 9 Barris. The festival closes on 25 October at L’Auditori’s Sala 2 Oriol Martorell with Los Aurora x Catalunya Flamenca, a production by Taller de Músics and L’Auditori under the artistic direction of Jose Manuel Álvarez. This celebratory performance marks the final concert of Los Aurora, a group formed in 2016 following a commission from L’Auditori to create a tribute to composer Manuel de Falla.

Los Aurora have been one of the leading exponents of flamenco-jazz forged in Catalonia over the past decade.

The ensemble, whose members met at Taller de Músics, has become a defining force in contemporary Catalan flamenco, shaped by Barcelona’s creative freedom and the influence of Enrique Morente. The farewell concert will bring together Juan Gómez “Chicuelo”, Ana Brenes, Marina Paje, Miranda Alfonso, Pol Jiménez, and Comando Reus, alongside the Dance Ensemble of the Professional Dance Conservatory of the Institut del Teatre and the Taller de Músics Choir, directed by Ana Brenes. Special guest Mario Gas will also collaborate on the production. Tickets for the closing concert are available via L’Auditori’s official booking page, where the event is listed for Sunday 25 October at 19:00. General admission is priced at €20.
