Bus Overrun by Floodwaters During Storm

A bus was trapped in floodwaters in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat during the night of Saturday 3 October 2026, as heavy rains from a severe storm overwhelmed drainage systems and filled streets. Water entered the vehicle when the doors opened on a flooded stretch, rising to knee height among passengers, according to reports from El Nacional and Telecinco. Passengers reportedly cried out in panic as water surged in. One woman attempted to open the doors in distress, potentially worsening the situation, but the driver maintained control and prevented further ingress. Once sealed, the water inside stabilised at street level, and those on board waited for the deluge to subside, many with soaked clothing and belongings.

Widespread Flooding Across Catalonia

L'Hospitalet was one of the worst-hit areas during the Friday-to-Saturday night storm, with historic watercourses like the Torrent del Lloro overflowing into lower-lying neighbourhoods. The city’s streets, garages, and transport infrastructure sustained significant damage. Across Catalonia, emergency services responded to more than 1,000 incidents overnight, including flooded homes and vehicles, fallen trees, and people trapped in cars, the regional fire brigade reported. In Granollers, rescue teams worked at full capacity, while in Pineda de Mar, a swollen stream swept vehicles toward the sea.

Recovery Underway

By Sunday 4 October, L'Hospitalet began recovery efforts, with residents and municipal workers clearing mud and debris. Mobility restrictions linked to the storm were lifted by 14:00 that day, though 487 water-related incidents had been recorded by 06:00, over half involving flooded homes and community spaces, according to Catalunya Press. Two people died in the storm, one in Tordera and another in Montornès del Vallès, while search teams continued looking for a missing person in the Riera de Pineda, the Generalitat’s fire service confirmed. The worst of the weather has passed, meteorologists say, though alerts remained in place across the Catalan coast into Monday 5 October.
