€20 Million Investment for New CENIT-UAB Centre
The Catalan government will invest €20 million between 2026 and 2029 to build the Center for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurotechnology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (CENIT-UAB) on its Bellaterra campus. The facility, projected to cost around €45 million in total excluding VAT, is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2029. Covering 17,809 square metres, the new centre will unite the UAB Institute of Neurosciences (INc-UAB), psychology and cognition research groups, and a dedicated neurotechnology platform under one roof.
Advancing Neuroprosthetics and Brain-Computer Interfaces
CENIT-UAB will focus on pioneering research into neuroprosthetics, brain-computer interfaces, neuromodulation, nerve regeneration, and technologies to restore sensory, motor, and autonomic functions. Scientists aim to use artificial intelligence to identify brain activity patterns and develop treatments for conditions including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and spinal cord injuries. The project combines biology, medicine, engineering, materials science, data science, and AI to accelerate both scientific discovery and technology transfer from lab to market.
This centre will position Catalonia as a European leader in neurotechnology, rooted in one of our strongest scientific ecosystems.
Bellaterra Campus to Host Integrated Research Network
Located within the Bellaterra science and technology hub, the centre will collaborate with existing institutions including the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM), the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), and the ALBA Synchrotron. It will also work closely with major healthcare partners such as Vall d'Hebron Hospital, Sant Pau Hospital, Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, and the Guttmann Institute to ensure research translates directly to patient care.
Timeline and Industry Collaboration
The executive design phase is due to conclude this September, with construction expected to be awarded in May 2027. The Generalitat’s funding will cover building works, facilities, and essential equipment. CENIT-UAB will also strengthen ties with neurotechnology and neuromodulation companies to attract investment and talent, supporting the development of innovative medical devices and therapies for public benefit.
