Modernisation Work Underway

Bellvitge University Hospital has begun a two-year project to relocate and modernise its short-stay surgery unit and a hospitalisation ward. The work, which started in August 2026, is being funded by CatSalut and is scheduled for completion in August 2028. The new units will be located on the first and third floors of the main building, in the area formerly occupied by operating rooms. According to the hospital’s manager, Dr Cristina Capdevila, the redesign will create facilities better adapted to the complexity of current patient needs and improve functionality for healthcare professionals.

Improved Layout and Facilities

The renovated spaces will follow current clinical pathways, with layouts that enhance visibility from nursing stations, streamline movement of patients and medical equipment, and bring staff closer to patient care areas. All rooms will feature accessible bathrooms, and medical infrastructure and equipment will be fully renewed. Measures to reduce ambient noise, improve air quality, and maintain stable temperatures are also included, aiming to support patient recovery and staff comfort.

New Elevators and Technical Upgrades

A key part of the project is the construction of a new vertical access shaft behind the Llobregat wing, housing two high-capacity elevators for bedridden patients. These will connect basement levels to the 13th floor, reducing transfer wait times and easing pressure on existing lifts. The upgrade will also allow clearer separation between patient transport routes and those used by visitors, supplies, and medications.

New air conditioning systems will be installed, along with photovoltaic panels to boost energy self-consumption and reduce the hospital’s environmental impact. Hospital authorities confirm that operations will continue safely throughout the works, with advance notice provided for any temporary changes to internal circulation routes.
