Project approved to improve safety and public space

Barcelona City Council has approved the executive project to relocate the cycle lane on Carrer de la Marina from the pavement to the roadway in the section between Ausiàs Marc and Diputació streets. This is the only remaining segment of the Marina cycle route, stretching from Ronda del Guinardó to Plaça dels Voluntaris Olímpics on the seafront, still situated on the pavement. The change aims to improve cyclist safety and network continuity, while freeing up pedestrian space on the sidewalk. By moving the lane to the roadway, the council said it will enhance the distribution of public space and coexistence between transport modes.

Bidirectional lane with segregated design

The new bidirectional cycle lane will be 460 metres long in each direction and located centrally within the roadway, separated by physical barriers. This central placement ensures seamless continuity with the existing cycle lane south of Ausiàs Marc and connects directly with the Llobregat-side bidirectional lane at Diputació. Road layout changes will vary across three sections:

  • Between Diputació and Gran Via: service strip, one bus lane, vehicle access towards the sea, bidirectional cycle lane, four lanes towards the mountains, and service strip.
  • Between Gran Via and Casp: service strip, one lane towards the sea, bidirectional cycle lane, four lanes towards the mountains, and service strip.
  • Between Casp and Ausiàs Marc: service strip, one bus lane and one vehicle lane towards the sea, bidirectional cycle lane, three lanes towards the mountains, and service strip.

Infrastructure upgrades and timeline

The project includes 16 new bicycle parking anchors, full roadway repaving, updated signage, and traffic signals. Barcelona City Council will tender the works this autumn, with construction scheduled for the first half of 2027 and an estimated duration of five months. The total investment is €893,619.46.
