New Bike Lane to Replace Car Lane
The Barcelona City Council has approved a major traffic reorganisation on Ronda del Guinardó, removing one lane for private vehicles to make way for a new bidirectional bike lane. The change will apply to the stretch between Vinyals and Torre dels Pardals streets. Under the plan, the current sidewalk bike path will be moved to the roadway, freeing up pedestrian space and connecting seamlessly with an existing 380-metre cycle route. The project, costing €451,697, will take five months to complete.
Private Vehicles Banned in Llobregat Direction
From now on, private cars and motorcycles will be completely prohibited from travelling towards Llobregat along this section. The road will be reserved exclusively for a new bidirectional bike lane and a bus lane.
This modification prohibits private vehicle circulation in that direction, as the new layout includes only the bike lane and a bus lane.
In the opposite direction, towards Besòs, one general traffic lane will remain alongside a dedicated public transport lane. No additional road space will be created; the cycling infrastructure will directly replace car infrastructure.
Part of Broader Cycling Expansion
This intervention aligns with wider efforts to expand Barcelona’s cycling network. According to the city council, 12 kilometres of new bike lanes are planned by 2027, with 9.3 kilometres of existing sidewalk paths to be transferred to the roadway for better safety and efficiency. The Ronda del Guinardó project follows April’s introduction of a bike lane on Travesía de Les Corts, which removed six green zone parking spaces and nine motorcycle spots. The move continues a trend of reducing car space in favour of active and public transport. Residents and drivers are advised to adjust their routes accordingly during the five-month construction period.
