The Barcelona City Council will invest €1.2 million to comprehensively redevelop Plaça del Poeta Boscà in the Barceloneta neighbourhood, aiming to create a more inclusive and accessible public space adapted to residents’ daily needs.

The 4,300 m² square, which hosts the local market, will see upgrades including an expanded and accessible children’s play area, water features, shaded zones, renewed paving, renovation of a significant part of the underground car park, and replacement of street furniture. The tender process for the works is set to begin in September, according to beteve.cat.

“This way we recover many years of disinvestment in a very cohesive neighbourhood whose residents have long demanded quality spaces and services,”

said Mayor Jaume Collboni, adding that the goal is “to allow residents to stay in their neighbourhoods.”

Broader Neighbourhood Renewal Underway

The project forms part of the wider Barceloneta transformation plan launched in 2024 with a total budget of €46 million. As of mid-2026, 70% of the plan has been implemented, focusing on improvements to public space (€17.8 million), facilities (€21.5 million), and public housing rehabilitation (€6.8 million).

Parallel efforts include the €5 million redevelopment of Pepe Rubianes street, currently in the tender phase. The design will incorporate feedback gathered through resident participation processes over recent years, as confirmed by the city council’s official Neighbourhood Plan portal.

Other Key Projects in Progress

  • The future CAP Barceloneta health centre will be built at Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 44, replacing the former Barceloneta clinic, with construction expected to follow the current roadmap.
  • The La Mar Municipal Nursery School is expanding from 63 to 100 places, with €1.1 million invested ahead of its reopening this September.
  • Eighteen municipal flats at Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 44, have been rehabilitated; 13 are already allocated. In Pinzón street, 81 homes for elderly residents are undergoing refurbishment.
