Barcelona's major shopping centres and retail streets in designated tourist zones will open on Sundays and public holidays from 17 May until 15 September 2026. Shops can operate between 12:00 and 20:00, offering extended retail hours for residents and visitors.
This extended opening schedule follows an agreement based on a 29 April 2022 resolution from the Generalitat's Director General of Commerce. The resolution permits shops and commercial centres in officially recognised tourist areas to open on these specific days. This marks the fifth consecutive year for the agreement, which aims to boost commercial activity during the warmer months.
Agreement and Worker Protections
Several key organisations signed the pact, according to Metrópoli Abierta. These include Fundació Barcelona Comerç, Barcelona Oberta, Pimec Comerç, Foment del Treball, the Associació Nacional de Grans Empreses de Distribució (Anged), UGT, CCOO, and the Ajuntament de Barcelona. The agreement also includes a monitoring table to ensure worker rights and hiring practices are upheld throughout the extended opening period.
Designated Tourist Zones
The tourist zone, expanded in 2022, covers numerous Barcelona neighbourhoods across several districts. This expansion allows a wider range of businesses to participate in the Sunday opening scheme, according to the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
In Ciutat Vella, the designated areas include El Raval, El Gòtic, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, and La Barceloneta. These historic neighbourhoods attract many visitors daily. The Eixample district, home to over 260,000 residents, also sees significant inclusion. Here, the Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample, l'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample, La Dreta de l'Eixample, La Sagrada Família, El Fort Pienc, and Sant Antoni are all part of the zone.
Further south, the Sants-Montjuïc district includes Sants, Hostafrancs, Poble-sec, and Font de la Guatlla. Les Corts and parts of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi also fall within the designated area. Specifically, Les Corts, Sant Gervasi-Galvany, and certain sections of El Putxet and El Farró are included.
Gràcia features La Vila de Gràcia, El Camp d'en Grassot, Gràcia Nova, Vallcarca i els Penitents, and a section of the La Salut neighbourhood. Meanwhile, Sant Martí and Horta-Guinardó incorporate La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou, El Poblenou, specific zones of El Parc i la Llacuna del Poblenou, Diagonal Mar, El Fòrum Marítim del Poblenou, and part of the Baix Guinardó neighbourhood. This broad coverage ensures that many key commercial areas benefit from the extended hours.
Affected Shopping Centres and Streets
Major shopping centres permitted to open their retail sections on these Sundays include Westfield Les Glòries, Diagonal Mar, Las Arenas, and Maremagnum. Maremagnum already operates every day of the year. Popular shopping streets, such as Portal de l'Àngel and Passeig de Gràcia, will also see extended Sunday hours. However, other large centres like Westfield La Maquinista, Barcelona's largest shopping complex, will only keep their leisure and restaurant areas open, as is standard on public holidays.
Key Opening Dates for 2026
The specific opening dates for 2026 are: * May: Sundays 17, 24, 31; Monday 25 (public holiday). * June: Sundays 7, 14, 21, 28. * July: Sundays 5, 12, 19, 26. * August: Sundays 2, 9, 16, 23; Saturday 15 (public holiday). * September: Sundays 6, 13.
This seasonal extension of shopping hours provides greater flexibility for residents and tourists to enjoy Barcelona's commercial offerings. The agreement ensures that while businesses benefit from increased footfall, worker protections remain a key consideration throughout the summer period.
