Barcelona Sants station will close its main access from Plaça dels Països Catalans from late September until late 2028, as major expansion works continue at the city’s main rail hub.

The closure affects pedestrians and vehicles, including the current drop-off and pick-up lanes. Adif, the rail infrastructure manager, said the change is needed for the final stage of Phase 1 of the station’s renovation, which includes new concourses for local, regional and high-speed rail services.

Two new access points are planned to reduce the impact. One will open on the sea side, near Parc de l’Espanya Industrial, by late September. Another will open on the mountain side, by Carrer Viriat and the bus station, by late 2026.

Barcelona Sants, which opened in 1979, has faced capacity problems for years. The current works began in 2023 and have already led to commercial space closures, the removal of false ceilings, and changes to private vehicle and taxi operations. Workers have also installed four large pillars to expand the local and regional train concourse.

The first phase of the renovation is due to finish by late 2028. It covers three main areas, enlarging the station on the Plaça dels Països Catalans side and restoring the plaza itself, while also reorganising the surrounding streets and access points. The new local and regional train and high-speed rail concourses are expected to be operational by the end of 2028.

Inside the station, the sea-Països Catalans quadrant will house the local and regional train concourse, with an 85% increase in surface area. The biggest change will be in the mountain-Països Catalans quadrant, which will become the new high-speed rail departures concourse and grow upwards by up to four levels, increasing its surface area by 175%. Adif said this work cannot be done while keeping public access open.
