Final Summer Sundays for Shopping in Barcelona

Retailers in Barcelona’s designated tourist shopping zones may open on five remaining Sundays, August 16, 23, and 30, and September 6 and 13, as well as on the public holidays of August 15 (Assumption Day) and September 11 (Catalonia’s National Day). These openings are permitted from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The special summer trading period, which began on May 17, will conclude on September 13. The arrangement applies only to businesses located within the Zona de Gran Afluència Turística (ZGAT), a designation approved under a Generalitat resolution on April 29, 2022. It does not apply city-wide, and individual shops decide whether to open.

Tourist Zones Covered

The ZGAT includes high-traffic areas such as La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta, El Raval, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, parts of Eixample, Sants, Poble-sec, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, and Sant Martí. Shopping centres and department stores in central areas typically operate Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, while smaller local shops often close on Saturday afternoons. Outside the ZGAT, standard Sunday closures remain in place.

Debate Over Expansion Continues

Business groups such as Barcelona Oberta argue that expanding Sunday openings could boost tourism revenue, positioning Barcelona as a weekend shopping destination. However, Barcelona Comerç and many small business owners say the current calendar is sufficient and warn that more Sunday trading would increase pressure on employees and independent retailers.

The Barcelona City Council has maintained the existing framework through 2026, with any further changes deferred until after the 2027 municipal elections. According to council assessments, spending during the 2025 Sunday opening period (May 15–September 15) rose by 8% compared to the previous year. Visitors planning to shop on Sundays are advised to confirm opening times directly with individual stores or shopping centres, as participation is optional.
