Barcelona City Council has approved a €2.7 million investment to convert Pavilion 2 of Fira de Barcelona into a new sports centre for Poble-sec. The site is on Avinguda de Rius i Taulet, in Barcelona, and forms part of the wider €2.8 billion Montjuïc transformation plan.
The council says the new facility is intended to meet expected population growth in Poble-sec, a neighbourhood at the foot of Montjuïc. The works are expected to take six and a half months.
The first phase will create two multi-sport courts covering more than 2,000 square metres. It will also include a new lobby, an access control point, two storage rooms, an infirmary, public services, and an administration office with space for three staff members.
The second phase will complete the centre’s facilities. It includes four collective changing rooms and four group changing rooms, each for 15 people, plus separate changing rooms for staff and referees. Retractable stands will add seating for 200 spectators on the first court and 40 on the second.
The sports centre is one part of the city’s broader Montjuïc plans, which the council says total about €2.8 billion. The wider strategy includes 12,000 homes in Marina del Prat Vermell, plus 500 more flats, a nursery and a primary care centre in Poble-sec.
Other projects in the plan include expansion of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, recovery of the Palau d'Esports, updates to the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic, and reurbanisation of Plaça Espanya and Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina.
