24-Hour Helpline and Carer Card Offer Vital Support

On Saturday 7th November 2026, Barcelona City Council reaffirmed its support for unpaid and professional carers through the expansion of l’Espai Barcelona Cuida and the rollout of the Targeta Cuidadora (Carer Card). The move comes ahead of International Carers Day, observed on 29th October, and responds to the growing need to protect the mental and physical health of those caring for dependent family members or others in the community. The Carer Card, now held by over 11,000 people, provides access to a network of 14 free services designed to reduce burnout and improve quality of life. These include continuous emotional and psychological support, legal and employment advice, and free self-care and respite spaces across the city.

Round-the-Clock Psychological Support

A key component of the initiative is a 24-hour emotional support telephone line, available to all Carer Card holders. The helpline, reachable at 936 420 124, is staffed by trained personnel supervised by psychology professionals. Additional psychological treatment is available via another dedicated line, 934 964 509, from 6:00 to midnight, Monday to Sunday, specifically for domestic care workers. The service aims to help manage stress, anxiety and emotional exhaustion caused by long-term caregiving, particularly in cases involving conditions like Alzheimer’s.

  • 24-hour emotional support: 936 420 124
  • Psychological treatment line (6:00–00:00): 934 964 509
  • General enquiries: 93 413 21 21
  • Email: [email protected]

The Carer Card also unlocks tailored support in legal and employment matters. Families hiring domestic care workers can receive guidance on formalising contracts through l’Espai Barcelona Cuida, helping to combat informal employment and gender-based economic inequality. Cardholders gain access to personalised advice, wellness workshops, peer support groups and discounted health services. They also receive targeted information via the Infocures channel on upcoming events, cultural activities and care-related news.

To be able to care for others, we must first care for ourselves.

Residents can apply for the Carer Card online at the official city portal or in person at l’Espai Barcelona Cuida. The service is free and does not require an appointment.
