Man Arrested in Barcelona Under European Warrant
Agents from the International Fugitive Research Group (GRIF) of the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested a 44-year-old man in Barcelona on Friday, 25 September 2026. The arrest followed a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by Norwegian authorities, who suspect him of involvement in a criminal organisation engaged in human trafficking for sexual exploitation and pimping. According to Norwegian investigations, the man is believed to have recruited and exploited several women in vulnerable circumstances between September 2025 and August 2026, primarily in Lillestrøm and other areas of southeastern Norway. The victims, mostly women with no prior ties to Norway, lacked local language skills, financial resources, housing, or support networks. Some had dependents in their home countries who relied on them financially.
Role in Alleged Exploitation Network
The Norwegian investigation alleges that the organisation facilitated the recruitment, transportation, accommodation, advertising, and commercialisation of sexual services. The suspect is said to have helped set the conditions under which the women were forced to work and secured apartments where services were provided. If convicted, the man could face up to 28 years in prison, 16 years for organised crime offences and 12 for pimping, under Norwegian law.
The case is extensive and concerns several young women having been recruited and sent to Norway to engage in prostitution.
Information sharing between Norwegian police and the Mossos d'Esquadra enabled Catalan investigators to locate the fugitive in Catalonia. GRIF agents found he had no fixed address and moved frequently between hotels, often departing early each morning. In past identifications, he had given false residential details in Barcelona.
Surveillance and Arrest
Investigators identified an associate of the man and launched surveillance. They observed a high-end rental vehicle linked to him near a residence and arrested him as he exited the car. Inside the vehicle were multiple suitcases and personal items consistent with frequent short-term stays. He was brought before judicial authorities in Barcelona and is now awaiting extradition proceedings to Norway.
Ongoing Cross-Border Cooperation
The operation highlights ongoing collaboration between European law enforcement agencies in combating transnational human trafficking. The Mossos d'Esquadra’s Central Coordination and Liaison Area worked closely with Norwegian counterparts under established international protocols. Further details on the case remain limited as investigations continue in both jurisdictions. The Generalitat has confirmed its commitment to supporting cross-border operations targeting human trafficking, including through participation in EU projects focused on victim protection and stakeholder impact assessment.
