Work Begins on Municipal Housing Project
The Badalona City Council has begun construction of 16 public housing units at 77 Liszt Street in the La Pau neighbourhood, marking the city's return to direct public homebuilding after two decades. The project, fully managed by the municipal company Engestur, is the first initiative of its kind in Badalona since the early 2000s. The homes will be offered on the protected official sale market, with prices ranging from €206,000 to €255,000 including taxes and VAT, depending on size and layout. Units will have two or three bedrooms and measure between 73 and 99 square metres.
Mayor: 'Anomaly Is Now History'
During the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday 9 October 2026, Mayor Xavier García Albiol stated the development ends a period he described as an anomaly for a city of Badalona’s size.
We are on a plot where, for the first time in 20 years, the Badalona City Council is building municipal housing. It was an anomaly that the third or fourth largest city in Catalonia had gone two decades without building a single publicly promoted apartment. Fortunately, that anomaly is now history.
The mayor made the remarks to media present at the site, underscoring the council’s renewed commitment to affordable housing provision.
Separate Social Rental Development Underway
In parallel, the council has launched a second development of 19 homes for social rent, with monthly rents set between €550 and €600. A unified registration period for both developments opens on Monday 12 October. Interested applicants must register via the official council portal, select their preferred option, purchase or rent, and meet the socioeconomic criteria outlined in the application call. The registration window will remain open for one to two months to ensure broad access. After verification of eligibility, allocations will be determined by public lottery in the first quarter of 2027.
