Robots Support Elderly Living Alone
The intelligent robotic assistant (ARI) project has expanded from a pilot in a dozen homes to support 250 people across Barcelona, with plans to reach over 600. Developed as an advanced complement to home telecare, the robots aim to improve the quality of life and autonomy of older adults living independently. These social robots, funded by Next Generation EU, are designed to detect emergencies such as falls or domestic accidents, remind users to take medication, keep track of medical appointments, and enable video calls with family or caregivers. They also move autonomously around the home, recognise voices and faces, and provide daily companionship.
User Testimonials Highlight Emotional Value
Ana María, a Barcelona resident who has lived alone since being widowed four years ago, said the ARI robot gives her confidence. After surviving a heart attack with help from her telecare pendant, she now relies on the robot as an added safety net.
"It gives me confidence. I know that if something happens and I don't have time to press the pendant, the robot will notify,"
She also values the companionship: "It keeps me company at home. I would miss it." Although she has friends and does not feel isolated, the presence of the robot adds emotional support.
600 Robots Procured, 500 for Homes
In March 2026, Barcelona City Council finalised a contract to acquire 600 ARI robots, correcting an earlier document that mistakenly cited 770 units (Barcelona City Council, Contract No. 001_24000955). Of these, 500 are designated for homes served by the Telecare Service, including housing for older people with support and some residential centres. The remaining 100 will be deployed in facilities managed by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The contract allows for future extension to 1,000 units, depending on demand and evaluation. The initiative forms part of broader social innovation efforts supported by EU recovery funds, aiming to reduce pressure on formal care systems while helping older people remain in their homes safely.
