Rehabilitation and maintenance work on the Vallcarca viaduct in Barcelona’s Gràcia district has begun, with the aim of reinforcing the structure’s safety and preserving its historical value. The project, which started on Monday 26 October 2026, forms part of the city council’s Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI) for 2026 and is expected to last approximately five months, finishing in spring 2027.

The €1.3 million intervention will focus on repairing deteriorated concrete, treating exposed reinforcement, sealing cracks, and restoring masonry elements. The structure, inaugurated in March 1923 after construction began in 1908, is a protected heritage site with Category C status, recognising its structural and historical significance. Designed by architect Miquel Pasqual Tintorer, it was one of the first major uses of reinforced concrete in Barcelona’s riverbeds.

Restoration and preventive measures

  • Cleaning of walls and removal of spontaneous vegetation and graffiti
  • Repair of sloping concrete surfaces and fissures
  • Humidity treatment and structural reinforcement
  • Application of water-repellent, anti-carbonation, and anti-graffiti protective coatings
  • Measures to deter pigeon nesting

The work also includes improvements to the nearby Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer bridge near Plaça Mons. These tasks are part of a wider city-wide effort under the Pla Endreça initiative, which includes maintenance on other bridges such as Vallbona, Meridiana, and Bac de Roda.

Minimal disruption expected

City officials have stressed that the intervention will not alter the configuration or operation of the viaduct, which connects the Vallcarca and El Coll neighbourhoods. Vehicle traffic will be maintained for most of the works, with pedestrian disruptions limited to specific phases, primarily during night-time hours or periods of lower traffic intensity.

This is preventive and conservation-focused work designed to extend the lifespan of a key piece of Barcelona’s infrastructure, said a spokesperson for the Gràcia district council.

The project is one of more than 1,300 public space maintenance and renovation actions taking place across 28 Barcelona neighbourhoods in 2026, supported by an overall investment of over €200 million under the Pla Endreça.
