Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona, the public operator for the city’s bus and metro network, has added 358 staff for this summer: 229 bus drivers and 129 metro customer service agents. For passengers, that means extra staff on services during the busiest months, with new recruits now joining frontline roles across both networks.

TMB said more than 1,000 people applied in each of the two recruitment processes. In the bus intake, 56 of the new drivers are women after a hiring process that reserved 40% of places for female candidates, a measure TMB says is intended to increase gender equality in a sector historically dominated by men.

New bus drivers and metro agents join summer service

According to TMB’s official announcement, the 229 new bus recruits have joined as driving staff, while the 129 metro recruits have joined as Agents d’Atenció al Client, or customer service agents. These metro roles include helping passengers across the network and, in some cases, train driving or manoeuvring duties.

  • 229 new bus driving staff
  • 129 new metro customer service agents
  • 358 total new staff for summer 2024
  • More than 1,000 applicants in each selection process, according to TMB

For regular commuters, families and visitors using public transport in July and August, the practical effect is a larger frontline workforce during the peak holiday period, when stations, platforms and bus routes often face heavier seasonal demand.

Women make up more than half of new metro agents

TMB said 66 of the 129 new metro customer service agents are women, meaning women account for just over half of this summer’s intake. The company said that marks an increase from last year, when women represented 40% of new agents recruited for the same role.

The operator also said more than half of the people hired in this metro recruitment round are under 30. TMB’s current metro customer service workforce stands at 1,950 people, with women making up 55% of that group.
