Platform response to weekend unrest

TikTok has activated a specialist taskforce and increased its content moderation efforts in response to the riots that took place in central Barcelona on Saturday 24th October 2026. The company confirmed it condemns all forms of violence and prohibits content that incites harm or criminal activity. In a statement to EFE, TikTok said it had implemented proactive checks using image and audio recognition technologies to detect and remove rule-breaking content. The platform is actively monitoring activity, removing videos, suspending live streams, and blocking accounts that violate its community guidelines.

Enhanced safety measures

Additional protective steps include blocking search terms that promote violence or illegal acts, disabling autocomplete for protest-related queries, and limiting search recommendations. When users search for terms like 'manifestaciónbarcelona', they are now met with a banner stating 'event unfolding', warning that information may be unverified, incomplete, or inaccurate.

Ten cuidado al ver este contenido y denuncia todo lo que pueda infringir las normas de la comunidad

The message urges users to report content that breaches community standards. TikTok is also temporarily restricting monetisation features on live streams related to protests to prevent financial exploitation of such events.

Núria Parlon, the Catalan government's Minister for Home Affairs (consellera de Interior de la Generalitat de Cataluña), stated on Monday 26th October that the initial call for the protest originated on platforms like TikTok. Organisers, she said, used disguised identities to direct young people to mass messaging groups on WhatsApp and Telegram for further instructions. Parlon has urged messaging platforms to shut down chat groups inciting chaos and social destabilisation. The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, are preparing to request judicial authorisation to trace online activity and identify those behind the coordination of the protest, which led to widespread disturbances, looting, and 130 arrests. Meta, owner of WhatsApp, has not commented on the matter.
