Three people died and 14 survived after 17 incidents involving people entering Barcelona Metro tracks between 1 January and 30 June 2026, according to the latest figures from Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the city’s public transport operator, reported by El Periódico.

The figures put prevention information in direct view for Metro passengers, including people in distress and witnesses who may need support after an incident. TMB is expanding platform and station notices intended for both groups.

  • 17 track-entry incidents were recorded in the first half of 2026.
  • Three people died after being struck by a train.
  • Fourteen people survived.

Prevention and witness-support notices planned for 123 stations

TMB plans to extend suicide-prevention and witness-assistance posters from 11 to 123 Metro stations within a year, according to a separate El Periódico report published on 14 July.

Passengers who see the notices can use the guidance displayed at their station, whether they are experiencing suicidal thoughts or have witnessed an incident. The supplied information does not specify which 11 stations already have the posters.

Metro and city officials have called for open discussion

At the presentation of an earlier prevention plan in September 2025, Laia Bonet, TMB president and a deputy mayor at the Ajuntament de Barcelona, said the data should be shared rather than hidden.

“These are data we do not want to hide. We need to share them. We want to talk about them, because the best way to address them is by talking about them.”

The 2025 plan was developed by TMB with the Ajuntament, the Generalitat’s Department of Health, the College of Psychology and the Fundació Ajuda i Esperança, according to El País. It included messages aimed at people with suicidal thoughts on platforms and support information for people who had witnessed an incident elsewhere in stations.
