Full service has resumed on six Rodalies commuter rail lines after a fatal incident in which a person was struck by a train between Vilanova i la Geltrú and Sitges, south of Barcelona. Trains now run on both tracks, though delays of up to 45 minutes persisted into the afternoon, according to Rodalies sources.
The disruption occurred at approximately 10:25 am on Tuesday, forcing trains to operate on a single track through the coastal corridor. Services affected included R2 Sud, R13, R14, R15, R16 and R17, all of which serve regional commuters travelling to and from central Barcelona.
Delays Continue Despite Restoration
Although normal track operations have been restored, passengers should expect residual delays. The incident caused widespread timetable disruptions, with some services delayed between 30 minutes and an hour during the morning peak.
Ongoing Engineering Works in the Region
This incident coincides with ongoing infrastructure upgrades by Adif between Garraf and Sitges, scheduled from 16 March to June 2026. During this period, single-track operation is already planned for parts of the route, reducing overall line capacity.
Under the current timetable adjustments (official notice), train frequency varies:
- Between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Barcelona: regular service
- Vilanova i la Geltrú/Sitges to Barcelona: two trains per hour per direction
- Garraf to Barcelona: four trains per hour per direction
A road transfer service remains in place between El Prat de Llobregat and Vilanova i la Geltrú during engineering hours.
