Partial R7 Service Resumes After Summer Works
Rodalies line R7 has partially resumed train service as of Monday, 7 September 2026, operating on a limited route between Montcada Bifurcació and Cerdanyola Universitat. The restoration follows the completion of the summer phase of infrastructure upgrades at Montcada Bifurcació station, a key rail junction north of Barcelona. During weekdays, two trains per hour will run in each direction on the restored stretch. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, service will operate at one train per hour in each direction. The partial recovery aims to improve mobility for residents and university students ahead of the new academic term.
No Service Yet Between Fabra i Puig and Montcada
The rail link between Fabra i Puig and Montcada Bifurcació remains suspended. Adif, Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, is continuing station remodelling works scheduled for completion in December 2026. Until then, passengers travelling from central Barcelona must use Rodalies line R4 to Montcada Bifurcació and transfer to the R7 for onward journeys to Cerdanyola Universitat. The R7 line was fully suspended from November 2025 to May 2026 due to major upgrades at Montcada Bifurcació, affecting around 7,500 daily commuters, many of them students at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). A temporary bus replacement service was operated during that period.
The partial restoration of R7 supports daily mobility while critical infrastructure work continues to enhance long-term rail capacity.
€34 Million Upgrade to Boost Capacity
The improvements at Montcada Bifurcació form part of a wider project exceeding €34 million in investment. According to Adif, the first phase, completed in November 2025, introduced nine new operational tracks to improve train routing, stabling, and flexibility for Rodalies lines R3, R4, and R7. A new passenger building, awarded for €7 million in October 2025, is under construction and will provide full accessibility, eliminating architectural barriers. These works contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goals 8, 9, and 11 by supporting economic growth, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable cities.
