Rodalies commuters travelling between Lleida and the Tarragona coast were hit by fresh disruption on Saturday when lines R13 and R14 were suspended between Vinaixa and La Plana-Picamoixons because of cable theft, just hours after rail service had been restored on the corridor.

The cut affected passengers using the inland section between Les Garrigues and Alt Camp, with replacement road transport brought in between the two stations while Adif, Spain's rail infrastructure manager, replaced the stolen cable. According to reports cited from Renfe, trains resumed shortly before 14.00.

The circulation of Rodalies lines R13 and R14 between the stations of Vinaixa and La Plana-Picamoixons was restored shortly before 14.00 on Saturday after a cable theft forced the service to stop.

The incident came on the same day that Renfe had recovered normal rail service between Sant Vicenç de Calders and La Plana-Picamoixons after tunnel works on that stretch of the network were completed. That meant passengers saw the reopened route fail again on its first day back in use.

What changed for passengers on Saturday

During the disruption, Renfe and Adif activated an alternative road service with intermediate stops between Vinaixa and La Plana-Picamoixons. For daily travellers on R13 and R14, that meant longer journeys and a change from train to bus in the middle of the route.

Another report on the incident said the interruption lasted for about two hours and caused delays of between 40 and 45 minutes on services running between Lleida and Sant Vicenç de Calders. It also said technicians from Adif and Renfe were sent to inspect the catenary after the theft and a nearby vegetation fire.

  • Affected lines: R13 and R14
  • Affected section: Vinaixa to La Plana-Picamoixons
  • Service restored: shortly before 14.00 on Saturday
  • Alternative transport: road transfers with intermediate stops

Pre-alert lifted after the line reopened

Protecció Civil, Catalonia's civil protection service, ended the pre-alert phase of the Ferrocat rail emergency plan once the incident was resolved. The pre-alert had been activated because the theft left the catenary without power.

For passengers planning weekend trips on this corridor, the practical position was that train service did resume on Saturday afternoon, but only after another breakdown on the day the route returned to normal operation.
