Storm Causes Widespread Blackouts

A severe rainstorm that began Saturday and continued into Monday has caused extensive power outages across Barcelona and its metropolitan area, leaving thousands without electricity for more than 24 hours. As of 9:30 AM on Monday 5 October 2026, Endesa reported ongoing faults in Barcelona, Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Premià de Mar, and Sant Cugat del Vallès. The electricity distributor confirmed it had managed 1,777 incidents since the storm began, with teams working through the night to restore supply. In some areas, including the Prosperitat neighbourhood of Barcelona, outages began in the early hours of Sunday and had not been resolved by mid-morning Monday, amounting to over 30 hours without power.

Residents Without Power for Over 30 Hours

Residents on Aritjols Street in Prosperitat said they lost power around 3:00 AM on Sunday and remained without electricity as of 9:30 AM Monday. One resident told El Periódico: "They've opened an incident for me, which I assume they have a lot of, and they told me they expect it to be fixed by 9:15 AM, but honestly, I don't believe it." In Sant Cugat del Vallès, more than 400 customers were affected by multiple outages, with 346 still without supply on Monday morning, according to e-distribución's outage map.

Storm Response and Restoration Efforts

Endesa deployed 360 workers and 20 generator sets to assist with repairs. The company cited flooded facilities, lightning strikes, fallen trees, and blocked roads as major obstacles to restoration. Despite the challenges, Endesa stated the electrical grid had performed "robustly and very stably" and that recovery efforts were advancing steadily. Public infrastructure was also affected, with traffic lights failing in Badalona and Sant Adrià de Besòs due to power cuts. Heavy rains prompted an ES-Alert for Vallès Oriental and Maresme, later extended to other areas, warning of torrential rain until 2:00 PM.

"We are facing an exceptional meteorological episode, with a complexity not only derived from the number of incidents but also from the damage to electrical infrastructure,"

What Residents Should Do

Endesa advises affected customers to:

  • Check if neighbours are also without power to confirm it is a grid issue.
  • Visit e-distribución's outage map for real-time updates.
  • Call their 24-hour helpline for information on restoration times.

The company said it continues to monitor the weather and is prepared to respond to new incidents as they arise.
