Philip Morris is preparing an IQOS heated-tobacco store at Passeig de Gràcia 8, between Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Carrer de Casp in Barcelona’s Eixample district. The 469-square-metre premises will add a large specialist tobacco-device retailer to one of the city’s most sought-after shopping streets.
The planned shop will be spread across three floors and is intended to provide information and customer service for smokers and potential smokers interested in how IQOS devices work, according to El Periódico. Visitors seeking that information will be able to find the store at number 8 once it opens.
A 469-square-metre retail unit changes hands
The property’s size and central location make the opening a significant change of tenant on this stretch of Passeig de Gràcia. The retail transaction was brokered by property consultancy aRetail, as reported by idealista/news.
- Ground floor: 179 square metres
- Basement: 170 square metres
- Upper floor: 120 square metres
The site was most recently occupied by fashion retailer Salsa Jeans. Before that, it housed the pintxos chain Txapela for almost 25 years, until the restaurant closed in November 2020.
IQOS expansion in Barcelona
IQOS is Philip Morris’s brand of heated-tobacco devices. The product entered the Spanish market at the end of 2016 and forms part of the company’s effort to increase the role of products that do not burn tobacco in its business.
El Periódico reported that heated-tobacco devices are not free of health risks. Philip Morris plans to use the Passeig de Gràcia premises to strengthen IQOS’s physical retail presence in Barcelona.
