Weekend Festival Celebrates Montjuïc’s Culture and History
On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026, the Viu Montjuïc: The Park of Culture festival will return for its sixth edition with more than 100 scheduled activities across Montjuïc Park. The event, co-organised by the park’s cultural venues, the Sants-Montjuïc District, Barcelona City Council’s Fourth Deputy Mayor’s Office for Economy, Finance, Housing and Tourism, and the Barcelona Institute of Culture, aims to celebrate the mountain as a major public space for culture, memory, and community. The programme is structured around three core themes: Remembering Montjuïc, Discovering Montjuïc, and Experiencing Montjuïc. These pillars guide a diverse range of events designed to engage residents and visitors of all ages with the park’s heritage, natural environment, and artistic life.
Walking Tours Explore Memory and History
Historical memory takes centre stage with guided walking routes. The Funeral Botany Route explores the plant life and symbolism of Montjuïc Cemetery, while the Fossar de la Pedrera Route honours victims of the Franco regime. A new addition in 2026 is a tour focusing on the 1936 People’s Olympiad and the bombing raids on Barcelona. Another highlight is (Re)viure el Lliure, a dramatised tour inside the Teatre Lliure that draws on memories from staff, artists, and audiences over the theatre’s 50-year history. This coincides with the theatre’s anniversary celebrations.
The anniversary party will be open to everyone in Plaça de Margarida Xirgu, featuring music, food, cake, candles, and surprises.
Live Arts and Performances Across Iconic Spaces
Live performances will animate Montjuïc’s most iconic locations. Montjuïc Dansat will feature students from the Institut del Teatre’s Professional Dance Conservatory performing in front of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). At Montjuïc Castle, a curated afternoon of contemporary dance will present short pieces by Graner. The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia will host Habitant llaços (Inhabiting Bonds), a dance-infused tour. Theatre offerings include El dol és aquella cosa amb ales (Grief Is the Thing with Feathers), a sensory theatre experience titled Traces of our ancestors, and L’oblit també sap volar (Oblivion also knows how to fly), a new immersive maze by Sensory Studios located at Montjuïc Castle. Poetry fills the Laribal Gardens with De noche de plata hacia, a night-time queer poetry recital by poet María Salgado and composer-singer Eddi Circa, promoted by the Joan Miró Foundation.
Gastronomy and Community Gatherings
Food and community come together in several large-scale events. La Colla de l’Arròs returns for its second edition in the Laribal Gardens, combining a communal rice feast with history, literature, and music. The Fontades Comunitàries (Community Fountain Gatherings) revive Montjuïc’s tradition of open-air gatherings with circus acts, cabaret, choral singing, tango, family activities, and live music. Participants can also join Dibuixem el Viu Montjuïc (Drawing Viu Montjuïc), a pair of sketching walks on Saturday and Sunday that invite attendees to tour and draw six of the park’s cultural institutions from an urban sketcher’s perspective. Concerts at the Bravas Fest in Poble Espanyol will feature Jam Nation and the Big Band Jam, with performances by Miqui Puig, DJ Amable, and Hotel Cochambre.
Funded by Tourist Tax for Local Benefit
The Viu Montjuïc festival is funded through the city’s tourist tax (IEET), which supports initiatives to enhance leisure opportunities and promote high-quality green and cultural public spaces, particularly for Barcelona residents. The event reflects a broader effort to make Montjuïc more accessible, inclusive, and vibrant, aligning with the Montjuïc Park Action Plan 2019–2029.
