Rules Vary by Location

With autumn rains boosting mushroom growth, many residents are heading to forests near Barcelona in search of rovellons, ceps, or camagrocs. However, the Generalitat’s Rural Agents warn that foraging without checking local regulations could result in fines. There is no general requirement in Catalonia for a permit to pick mushrooms in forests, according to the Agents Rurals. But specific rules apply in protected natural areas. For example, the Paratge Natural d’Interès Nacional de Poblet requires a specific authorisation for mushroom collection, while picking mushrooms is completely prohibited in the Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici.

Montseny and Local Council Rules

The Parc Natural del Montseny allows mushroom picking for personal consumption, provided it is non-commercial and does not harm protected species or the forest floor. The use of rakes or tools that disturb soil and leaf litter is prohibited under local ordinances. Beyond protected parks, local councils and private landowners may impose their own restrictions. The Catalan Civil Code states that landowners have rights over forest produce, including mushrooms, unless there are uso rights. This means foragers must respect no-collection signs and access instructions.

Before heading out with your basket, it is most recommended to check the conditions of the chosen forest, respect the signs, and consult the instructions of those responsible for the area.

Check Access and Use Digital Tools

Foragers should also verify whether temporary access restrictions are in place, such as those currently affecting Collserola. Even if conditions are favourable for mushrooms, entry or collection may not be permitted. Technology is aiding preparation: the Boletada.cat platform provides daily updated maps predicting favourable areas for different species based on temperature, humidity, altitude, forest type, and soil. However, the platform stresses that its maps do not grant access rights to private or protected land. Further information on foraging rules is available through the Generalitat's hunting and foraging services and licensing portal.
