8,000kg of Hashish Seized in Cabanes Warehouse

On 1 October 2026, the Mossos d'Esquadra concluded an operation in Cabanes, Alt Empordà, seizing 8,025 kilograms of hashish hidden among legal goods in a trailer at an industrial warehouse. The drugs had an estimated street value of over €16.2 million and were linked to a criminal network under investigation since June 2026. Seven men were arrested during the operation, which also uncovered a firearm in one of the vehicles connected to the suspects. The seizure forms part of a broader effort by Catalonia’s regional police force to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks operating across the region.

Núria Parlon, Minister of Interior and Public Security for the Generalitat, reiterated on 9 October 2026 the need to toughen penalties for large-scale marijuana trafficking. She cited the Cabanes case as evidence of the scale and sophistication of current criminal operations. According to Parlon, dismantling such networks requires not only strong law enforcement but also enhanced police intelligence, cross-force coordination, and international cooperation.

We must strengthen the legal framework so that those who profit from addiction and violence face consequences that match the harm they cause.

So far in 2026, the Mossos have intercepted nearly 14,900 kilograms of hashish, a figure that underscores the growing challenge of drug-related crime in Catalonia.

Focus on Organised Crime and Public Safety

The Department of the Interior has stated its commitment to prioritising investigations into large-scale trafficking rings. Parlon highlighted that these operations impact not only public health but also community safety and social coexistence. The Mossos’ 2026 drug interdiction figures represent a significant increase compared to previous years, prompting renewed calls for legislative reform at both regional and national levels.
