Heightened Security for Halloween Amid Threat of Unrest
On Saturday 31st October 2026, the Mossos d'Esquadra are deploying more than 300 officers across Barcelona to prevent disturbances linked to online calls for blockades and looting, known as 'Blocus'. The operation follows warnings from Catalan President Salvador Illa, who stated early this morning via social media that anyone attempting to loot will face justice. Illa’s message, posted on X, read: "Whoever comes to loot will answer to justice, just as those arrested on the 24th are already answering." He added: "We know there are calls for this Saturday and the @mossos are prepared. The Castanyada is for everyone and is celebrated in the street."
Legal Measures Against Minors
The Barcelona Juvenile Prosecutor's Office has requested that 70 individuals detained during the October 24th disturbances be prohibited from attending any demonstrations. The request includes supervised release conditions and a ban on participating in any gatherings within one kilometre of public spaces anywhere in Spain. A total of 89 minors were arrested during the unrest, with 46 of them subject to legal measures requested by the Prosecutor's Office. Six minors are being recommended for internment under judicial supervision, while the remaining cases are under review.

Coordinated Police and Judicial Response
A special session of the Barcelona Local Security Board, chaired by Mayor Jaume Collboni and Interior Minister Núria Parlón, confirmed full coordination between police and judicial authorities. The meeting, held on Thursday 29th October, included representatives from the Mossos d'Esquadra, Barcelona City Police, National Police, Civil Guard, judiciary, and prosecution. The board reaffirmed a policy of maximum firmness in response to any violent acts, with preventive operations and continuous monitoring of social media activity. Authorities stressed that those inciting violence, including through anonymous online channels, would be held accountable, as would their legal guardians.
- 130 arrests were made during the October 24th incidents
- Firefighters responded to approximately thirty incidents of public fires
- Two minors have since been arrested for inciting further riots via Telegram groups
- One 16-year-old from Bellmunt d'Urgell was arrested for creating a Blocus group calling for Saturday’s protest
Authorities urge families to remain vigilant and responsible, particularly given the convergence of Halloween and the traditional Castanyada celebrations in the city. The public is advised to avoid areas with known gatherings and to follow official updates via the Mossos d'Esquadra website and local emergency channels.
